On March 14 of 2026, the Trump Administration approved a 5 billion dollar project that will commence as soon as all permissions are granted, for the penetration of our oceans for oil. According to The New York Times, British energy giant BP is the owner of this project, and it is estimated that the project will be about 250 miles off the coast of Louisiana and would produce about 80,0000 barrels of oil per day from a total of 6 wells commencing in 2029. The seafloor that they will be drilling in is known to hold about 10 billion barrels of crude. Following their second deepwater oil spill disaster in 2010, Kaskida, which the project is named, would be the second deepwater project in the Gulf since the explosion on Deepwater Horizon. Paul Takahashi, who is a BP spokesperson, said this project would pave the way for years of technological innovations, and it is all the more important for the topic of climate change.
However, opponents claimed that the “extreme pressures and high temperatures” would cause significant danger to the Gulf communities and marine life. As a result of this, environmental groups have gathered to try to combat this operation’s take off. Mr. Wright would say in a statement that during a time when Iran and their “terrorists” were trying to disturb the oil supply in America, the Trump Administration is said to be fighting this fight and giving America what it needs. Following this, it was stated that the company in charge of the entire operation would need machinery strong enough to withstand the high heat and extreme pressures that this project requires; however, they tried to downplay the seriousness of what it actually entails.
Opponents have said that BP had done enough to make sure that this new project would be different from the previous disaster that was the Deepwater Horizon, and even their emergency plan had not been updated since the last incident 15 years ago. It was stated that this project would be a serious “Threat to the communities that will be harmed by decades of additional oil that gets refined next to their homes and children’s schools.” In contrast to this, the Trump Administration is claiming that they are aiding families in need of electricity and lower electric bills.
Furthermore, The New York Times reported that BP was misleading with its reports and did not have the necessary equipment to prevent high-pressure blowouts. They further said that the likelihood of oil drilling success is less than the actual likelihood of oil production.
As all said, it is important to note that the backlash that the Trump Administration is receiving has made them become aggressive due to the negative commentary from people. For this reason, their plans have not begun smoothly.
