Attention all students of Flushing High School! A new policy has been adopted regarding the dress code for this new school year. No Hats and No Hoods allowed inside the campus anymore started at the beginning of the spring semester. The changes were made to improve safety and help staff identify every student in the halls. This new protocol is a careful measure that is being taken in advance to prevent harm, danger, or any injuries to any students or school staff. It’s a helpful way to identify every individual and intruders who come into the campus. While students may still bring hoods or hats to school, they must be removed as they enter the building.
Some students have different reactions to change. Some might argue that it makes sense for safety reasons, while others disagree with the rule, claiming they feel more comfortable wearing hoodies and hats. A student stated “Personally, I would like to have my hoodie on inside the campus at times because it keeps me comfortable and secure, especially during colder days.” Although students disagree with the policy, if seen on, they will simply tell you to remove it but if they disobey it, it can lead to a lot of consequences. I’d rather prevent these consequences and follow the protocol rather than waste time and get in trouble. While this ban on hoods and hats is being adjusted, students are reminded of our other enforced school codes. Like banning our phones and any electronic device. Also after the 2-minute announcement, students must move quickly to their next class. If caught in the halls or if disregarded, rules and consequences will be applied, such as:
- A warning
- After school detention
- Phone call home/Conference with parent(s)
Some days it might get irritating not being able to have our hoodies on, but I have seen that some days go by faster. Additionally, students removing hoodies or hats in the building won’t cause any harm, and it’s a very simple thing to do. While these rules may seem strict and could get frustrating, hopefully, in the later future we can make a change that allows school administrators to review and adjust the rules. Following policies are easy and can lead to organization and safety, not just for you but for all, so next time you walk in school remember to take off your hood and hat and take this chance to maybe show off your hair!
