The 2025 football season has officially begun at Flushing High School, and while the record currently stands at 1-3, there is more happening off the field than wins and losses. The team is at the beginning of a campaign fueled by heart, toughness, and a desire to improve on and off the field.
Led by a dedicated coaching staff, Coaches Yannucci and Negreon, the Red Devils are putting in the effort to produce not only solid athletes but also solid students and good young men. Practice has been intense, focused, and physical —a sign of the tough mentality the team is trying to build.
Linebacker Jaden Garcia, one of the team’s vocal leaders and a key member of its defense, spoke about the team’s mindset this season. “This team wants to do great things as we all work together,” Garcia said. “The games have been really physical, and some of our guys have been dealing with some injuries, but we just gotta deal with it and keep coming back.”
Injuries are now one of the Red Devils’ early-season issues, as several players have been hurt or dinged up in recent games. But with the next man to step up, the team is still digging deep, showing that toughness and heart can take one far when talent alone is not enough.
But game-day performance is only half the story. At Flushing High, to be a student-athlete means to be precisely that, a student before an athlete. The coaches are making the message clear that academics come before game day. If your grades aren’t right, your time in the field won’t be either. It’s an unpopular but necessary standard, and one which is shaping a culture of accountability.
“Our coaches make it clear that school matters,” Garcia said. “They’re improving us in all aspects. Not just on the field but in school, in how we present ourselves, and how we prepare everything.”
As the team itself continues to grow and evolve, everybody is now counting down until the Homecoming Game on November 9. A game that players, coaches, and fans alike are putting on their calendars. It’s not a normal game; it’s a statement. And with every practice, the team is striving to be ready for that day.
Even so, it’s not too late to hop on the ride. If you’re a student seeking a new experience, a person who’s always had an itch to play, or even just a fan who wants to express support for the team, there’s room for you. Coaches Yannucci and Negreon welcome anyone interested to visit, ask questions, and consider stepping up. The door is still open.
In a season that’s already testing the Red Devils in every conceivable manner, one thing is for sure: this team is not going away. They’re building up with grit, with pride, and with the sort of work ethic that may well surprise people before the season is over.
