All students at Flushing have an opportunity to get involved with Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE), an organization led by Max Miller from the College Office. Founded in 1974 by Chinese-American laborers advocating for equal rights and access to employment, AAFE has evolved into an organization addressing immigration and youth engagement. AAFE stands firmly for social justice for Asian Americans and all New Yorkers.
“Our goal on the Youth Team is to develop critically conscious and active social change agents by offering a supportive community, leadership development programming, and college and career counseling,” Miller adds.
This dedication to empowering the next generation reflects AAFE’s purpose of advocating equality. AAFE offers exciting volunteer opportunities for all students, with no prior requirements.
Opportunities are organized as needed, with AAFE sending advance emails about upcoming activities to keep volunteers informed. Events vary in size; some may require as few as two volunteers, while others might need up to twenty-five or thirty. And speaking other languages helps a lot, too!
Volunteers are selected on a first-come, first-served basis, and while event hours are typically fixed, volunteers are welcome to attend for part of an event if they cannot for the full duration. All students are welcome to work as many events as they please. Occasionally, gift cards are offered as a token of appreciation! Students can also include their involvement with AAFE on their resume and college applications. Voluntary work showcases your intent to create impact, which is an important detail colleges look for! This is your chance to engage with the community. Join AAFE today!
