When asked, “How has teaching here in Flushing changed over time?” He answered, “Teaching at Flushing High School has changed in several ways, more often than not to fit the changing demographics of the school community and to fit the educational needs of the students. One way that it has changed is that teachers use a variety of educational technologies that I didn’t have at the beginning of my career. I started by using chalk and a blackboard; however, today, we use interactive technologies like smartboards and Google classroom.”
Mr. Gibbs gives us an authentic insight from being a teacher; it gives a good sense of the technological changes and what teachers have witnessed over the years.
Continuing the interview when asked, “What has made you continue to stay here in Flushing after all this time?” He responded, “I have enjoyed teaching in Flushing because the school leadership, staff, and students have built a culture of learning that I’m proud to be a part of.” Being here at Flushing really speaks to the positive atmosphere and supportive community that Mr. Gibbs has found in Flushing over the years. Finally when asked the last question, “What inspired you to become a teacher?” He replied, “I was inspired to become a teacher by my professors in college. They framed teaching as a transformative mission to strengthen communities. I saw it as an opportunity to work with young people at a point in their lives when they are most impressionable. I hope that I provide encouragement, and build strong relationships with students and staff to achieve my professional goal: to enhance the school community.”
