As the volleyball season ends, it’s time to celebrate our seniors. On Wednesday, October 29th, the girls’ varsity team will honor them with a special game and ceremony recognizing their hard work and achievements.
Coach Ortiz shared his feelings about the seniors leaving: “I feel really bittersweet about my seniors leaving. One of my captains is leaving, and she’s been with the team all four years. My other senior has been here for two years, and she’s been fantastic.”
With 2 seniors being on the team and one of them being the captain, the team environment and dynamic will change. So I asked Coach Ortiz what he thinks will change and how it will affect the team. “The dynamic of the team will definitely change once the seniors leave, as before my captain, who’s been on the team for 4 years and has been one of our best players every year, and kids look up to and can rely on, will be really missed. A lot of girls are going to have to step up and fill some big shoes.”
Vena Lin is a senior in QHSLS and has been on the team for 2 years, and she plays opposite. Kayla Vetter is a senior at Flushing High School and has been on the team for four years. The position she plays is outside hitter. She has also been the captain for 2 years. Since the seniors have been on the team for a long time, I asked Ortiz how the seniors have affected the team, and he said, “The seniors have affected how the team is because they’ve been here for the last few years and really have a passion for wanting the best for the team. So they’re commitment and standards for what it is to be a varsity player were really set by them, and they did their best making sure everyone knew what it takes to be a good competitive team.”
